Olympic medallist Sharron Davies has hit out at a Labour MP who defended a transgender swimmer. Davies accused former women’s and equalities spokesman and current Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols of ‘abandoning’ women’s rights for her comments about Lia Thomas.
Thomas, who began hormone therapy that lowers the amount of testosterone in the body in 2019, became the first known transgender athlete to win an NCAA champion. Competing in the 500-yard women’s freestyle last week, she beat Olympic silver medallist Emma Weyant by more than a second and a half.
