Former Olympian Sharron Davies has compared trans athletes with doping cheats and claimed the inclusion of trans athletes has resulted in women being “discriminated” against.
The former athlete from Plymouth made the comments on LBC following American swimmer Lia Thomas’ landmark victory in the women’s 500-yard freestyle at the United States college championships. The 22-year-old made history by becoming the first transgender person to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I title.
Ms Thomas transitioned in 2019 and has competed in women’s NCAA swimming since 2020. Her participation in female sport reached headlines in recent months after winning a national swim meet by a margin of nearly 2 seconds, beating an Olympic silver medallist in the process.
