Working Lunch TV show
I featured as the special guest on BBC's Working Lunch on Wednesday 18th March. It was good fun and a diferent kind of show for me to do. You can see it on the BBC iPlayer at -
Question of Sport
It has been a very busy 2009 thus far with too many things to report on. However I have just filmed another Question of Sport which I believe will be airing on Friday April 3rd. This time I was on Matt Dawson's team (on my last appearance I was on Phil Tuffnel's team and we managed to set a points record!) with cricketer and 'Strictly...' winner Mark Ramprakash. We were against Phil, Brian Moore of England rugby fame and my old mate Sir Steve Redgrave. If you want to know the result you'll have to watch!
Change of Plan!
Because of weather chaos quite a few Wright Stuff guests didn't make their slots last week so quite a bit of re-scheduling has gone on. My appearance will now be on a different date and I shall keep you posted here.
The Wright Stuff
I shall be appearing on Channel 5's 'The Wright Stuff' on the morning of Tuesday Feb 10th. I've done the show before, always enjoy watching it and get on well with Matthew Wright who is a very good broadcaster. I've no idea what we'll be talking about and what subjects will come up but I'm sure it'll be fun. I hope you can tune in.
Magazine Articles
Some interesting and varied magazines will be doing articles on me over coming weeks. From Combat Magazine (the UK's top martial arts title) to Sports-IQ (a quality online publication) and Sports Insight. I'll post up publication dates when I know them.
NHS Active Initiative
I've recently been to the impressivley large, versatile and well equipped Dome Leisure Centre in Doncaster to draw attention to a great new initiative. The first of its kind scheme is funded by the NHS and is designed to introduce more people to physical activity. For one thing it now means that 120,000 Doncaster residents can go for a free swim in local leisure centres which is great news. I gave a swimming lesson to kids from two local schools - and was very impressed by the standards - and spoke to regional TV and radio stations and papers. The day seemed to go very well and I gather feedback was very postive. I wish them the very best with this scheme.
Public Speaking
I've delivered a few motivational presentations recently which I always enjoy and have been doing for a number of years. In fact I'm currently putting together a team of fabulous people who have all achieved great things in sport as well as their personal lives. The idea is to provide businesses, schools, colleges etc with a menu of high class presenters with uniquely inspiring stories. People can pick and choose whether they want one, two or three speakers and we can tailor presentaions to the requirements of the audience. A dedicated page will soon be placed on this site from where a brochure PDF can be downloaded
British Fashion Awards
What an experience that was. I went along to the event in London and was greeted by a mass of flash bulbs and demands to look this and that. Even for someone not unused to being photographed I have to confess this was a bit 'alarming'! I thought I was being daring with my reasonably short and low cut dress, black tights and boots...but compared to many I was significantly overdressed! A number of pictures of me did make it into the national media with kind comments so I think it was worth the risk!
I sat at a very interesting table. There was my old swimming buddie Mark Foster, Sven's ex Nancy Dell Olio, Kristina Rihanoff and Camilla Dallerup from Strictly Come Dancing (they were lovely and Kristina's sadness at John Sergeant's departure from the show was still evident) and Tara P-T whose function I've never fully understood!
Good Food Show
Recently did a day at the NEC for Bernard Matthews at The Good Food Show. All went well and it looks like BM's message of quality home reared meat is getting through.
My Birthday!
It was my birthday on Saturday (Nov 1) and as ever it coincided with all kinds of halloween fun and games as well as early bonfire night celebrations. So the house was bedecked in plenty of spooky paraphenalia, costumes looked suitably scary and the fireworks display was spectacular. We all had a lovely weekend.
Food Show - NEC November 26th
I shall be at this event for Bernard Matthews. Maybe I'll see some of you there?
TV Cookery Show
On Tuesday November 4th I am recording something called The Daily Cooks Challenge with Anthony Worrel Thompson. It should be a lot of fun but I'm not yet sure when it'll be broadcast. As soon as I know I shall notify you here.
BOA Dinner
I recently attented the BOA Dinner in the wonderful surroundings of The Natural History Museum. It's not everyday you get to share a spectacular meal with a 150 million year old Diplodocus! Olympians old a new were there (the new ones are getting back into training now after all the efforts of Beijing and post Games functions and commitments) and it is always good to catch up with Princess Anne who is such a central figure in the organisation.
Olympic Parade
Our Olympians have just enjoyed a well deserved day of public recognition in London. The open top parade was a huge success, the great British public came out in force and the sun shone from a bright blue sky. It couldn't have been more fitting for our most successful band of Olympians in over 100 years.
I helped cover the event for the BBC and was given a prime position at Trafalgar Square from which to broadcast. It was a wonderful event to be part of and all adds to the momentum and build up to 2012. I had the pleasure of talking to numerous key figures on the day including Conservative leader David Cameron and London's Mayor Boris Johnson who is absolutely dedicated to the successful planning and implementation of our coming Olympics.
Bernard Matthews
My association with Bernard Matthews continues. Some of the press have had a bit of a field day with this but if they'd bothered to take the trouble of finding out what it is all about they'd have realised their indignance was very wide of the mark. There is Farm to Fork campaign in the build up to Christmas which also highlights the fact Bernard Matthews carries Red Tractor and Green Tick standards.
Sleep Council
I have just done some work with the Sleep Council about exercise to do before going to sleep. This material will apear on a website during October. More details when I have them
Aches & Pains 2.
I've recently spend a night in hospital having had exploratory surgery on my right knee and an epidural in my back to combat the excrutiating pain caused by a prolapsed disc. We know my knee is not in good shape and will need serious attention at some point in the future but the good news is that the anterior cruciate ligament is hanging on for now! The injection has eased my back trouble and I can now go about the business of sitting down, driving a car and lifting my baby again! A check up on October 20th will reveal more about what happens next.
Gala Awards Dinner
Have just been to the Co-Op Awards Dinner in Manchester. And what a 'do' it was. The Gmex was filled with 900 guests and the likes of myself and comic Dara O'Briain to hand out awards and do a bit of talking. Dara did around 30 minutes of stand-up and was fantastic. I've not met him before but am a big fan of Mock The Week. He was terrific and went down very well - though I have to say I was getting a bit concerned as to how often he was working me into his act!
Afterwards I had the pleasure of catching up with my old friend
Diane Youdale ('Jet' from Gladiator days). She is still a busy girl - just about to start a stint on BBC radio in the North East amongst much else - and hasn't changed a bit. Her website is
www.dianeyoudale.co.uk.
Aches & Pains
I've been carrying a number of aches and pains in recent months and have decided to get everything seen to at once. This means a nasty spinal injection to aid with a prolapsed disc and yet another operation on my right knee which is in very poor shape at the moment. Hopefully I won't be 'off games' for too long!
Handover Party - The Mall, London
What a fantastic day! The closing ceremony in Beijing was as spectacular as we'd come to expect and I thought our London 2012 eight minute segment was fun, stirring and a breath of fresh air. When it handed over to us in The Mall we got going with the cast of We Will Rock You and the fun and pace didn't let up for a couple of hours.
My daughter Grace was with me and she had a great time behind he scenes meeting bands like The Feeling and people like James Morrison (who asked to have his photo taken with me...I wasn't going to say no as I love his music!) as well as medallists Bradley Wiggins and Phillips Odowu. It was all very relaxed and I think because it was an event predominantly about sport the musical acts were happy to take a back seat and just enjoy it themselves.
After it was all over I set off to Plymouth only for the BBC to contact me later and ask me to appear on the 'athletes coming home' programme from London the next day. I was already in Plymouth by now so a compromise was reached and I did what turned out to be quite a lengthy bit from BBC TV studios in Devon.
It has been fun to remain part of the on-going coverage of the games and so encouraging to see how much interest and momentum our athletes have created.
Hello Magazine
A recent issue of Hello has carried a four page feature on me with several pictures of me and the children. I'm proud to say Elliott, Grace and Finley looked fabulous in them. The main thrust of the feature was about being active and getting out and doing things as a family. My work with Hewlett Packard (mentioned below) was central to the article.
Olympic Handover Ceremony - I shall be involved in the handover ceremony in The Mall on Sunday and it promises to be a very special party. I believe I'm also going to be interviewing Michael Phelps which should be a total pleasure. I spoke to him several times in Beijing and he is a very humble and engaging man. TV coverage starts Sunday afternoon on BBC...don't miss it!
I've been asked by AOL to write a daily Olympic blog for their website giving an inside line on events and offering my opinion on one or two things. I'll be posting the same material on this website 24 hours after publication but for up to the minute daily blogs visit
SportsAid Foundation - My final Olympic blog for AOL which rounds up events in Beijing is also being used in part by The SportsAid Foundation. I am a Patron of this fantastic organisation and I'd encourage you to find out more about its work at www.sportsaid.org.uk.
'Superstars' - Channel 5. Please try to watch the Final on Friday August 29. There is an amazing finale that will keep you on the edge of your seats I promise!

Probably the two most high profile events in my life right now are the Beijing Olympics and the return of iconic TV show Superstars. Very different events but a tremendous pleasure and privilege to have some involvement with both.
Much has been said about the wisdom and validity of placing the Olympic Games with China. However I believe it has shone a spotlight on the country and it's various issues in a way that nothing else could. Global awareness has been created and pressure brought to bear on a country that was previously very secretive and closeted. And that can only be a good thing. On the sporting front it should be a breathtaking spectacle as always. Inevitably the focus for medals is on track and field and there may not be rich pickings there this time, but looking across the board Team GB could do very well - cycling, sailing, badminton, shooting, boxing, equestrian, archery...the list goes on.
I will be spending much of my time around the pool of course and am looking forward to seeing our men and women in action. We have a strong, solid and talented team many of whom put in impressive performances in the recent World Short Course Championships in Manchester. However that was an entirely different format and proposition to the Olympics. We shouldn't burden them with too high expectations but I really believe we have a good number of individuals who will do themselves justice. The immediate future of GB swimming looks healthy with talented youngsters coming through, supportive 'old hands' and an exciting new coaching set-up. And what about my old friend Mark Foster. At 38 years old he is swimming in his 5th Olympics - amazing! Only an American can top that with Dara Torres coming back into the pool at the ripe old age of 41 - you see, swimming doesn’t just have to be about youngsters!
Of course a lot of media attention has fallen on Tom Daly who has reached the Olympics at just 14! Having done the same thing myself as a 13-year-old I know a bit about this. Tom is a terrific lad and a wonderful talent and he should really be left alone to soak up and enjoy the whole magical experience. Just being there is a phenomenal achievement. Whatever happens this time will only serve to benefit him in future competition. Remember - he'll still be a young man in 2012!
I shall let you know how it all went in these pages when I return.

Superstars (
http://superstars.five.tv) - What an honour and privilege to be part of the resurrected Superstars TV series on Channel 5. And what fun! Of course I was an avid viewer first time round and competed in a ladies version of the show back in early 80’s. This time we have tried to elaborate on the old format whilst incorporating all that made it such a family favourite in the past. You may have noticed even the logo and theme tune are the same!
Using teams has created a whole new dynamic and has also allowed for characters and personalities to come through and develop and the series progresses. This is something the production team was very keen to achieve. Though the faces and names are familiar you might not have been so aware of the real personalities before. It was great fun to work on and the competitors were terrific. I had met a number of them before and it was a pleasure to make some new acquaintances. There were a number of jokers in the pack but for me boxer Jane Couch was an absolute star and kept competitors and crew entertained throughout. I must also make special mention of my co-presenter Jim Rosenthal. He is one of our great sports broadcasting professionals and an ultimate pro. He is a joy to work with and a great man to learn from.
I can't give anything away but I will say that the entire series builds to the most amazing finale!
Elsewhere I've filmed a recently shown item for The Gadget Show in which I tried out some heart rate monitors and gave my thumbs up to the Adidas phone heart rate monitor music playing sat nav egg boiling mountain rescuing tele-porting machine!! Another piece for TV will soon be shown on The Inside Out Show which was all about our local pools being closed by local authorities. It is a little known fact, but unlike libraries and social services, local councils have no mandate from government to provide leisure facilities such as swimming pools! I feel it is important that we invest in the health of the nation, build more facilities to keep us fit in so we don’t need to build so many hospitals to fix us in...hopefully !
I've attended a Graduation Ceremony in Hull which required a speech to all the assembled graduates and families before shaking over 1,000 hands and handing out the certificates!
It has also been fun helping Hewlett Packard with their Treasure Hunt initiative which is designed to get families together outside, having fun during the summer months. Visit their website to download and make your very own treasure hunt maps to enjoy with your family - http://h40055.www4.hp.com/summer/?jumpid=ex_r861_1-mrmid_ie_en_hho_ipg/mu//summer
Any trip to the House of Commons is fascinating and being involved in an IVF cause made it doubly so. My youngest Finlay was an IVF baby so I try to help, take part and speak up wherever I can on this subject.
My association with Bernard Matthews continues and whilst this has been misunderstood and misrepresented in much of the press, it is based on healthier eating. Turkey is a fantastic source of protein and has the lowest levels of fat of any meat. It is also great value for money, very important in this day and age of rising prices. It’s a super food that athletes use a lot and we as a family eat plenty of. And I am proud of my association with this old, British company that supplies many jobs. Like a lot of brand leaders they are the first and easiest to criticize. Check out the Bernard Matthews website for lots of great recipes at www.bernardmatthews.com and my own page and series of films on http://www.turkeyfortoday.com/features/sharron/
The usual round of radio interviews and comments continue with stations from BBC Radio Five Live to Kerrang FM. And as the 2008 Olympics approach before giving way to our 2012 Olympics requests for interviews are unlikely to slow down! It is never a problem though and I am fortunate to have worked my way into a position where broadcasters and editors do ask me what my thoughts are on various subjects.
My Winning4Women presentation team is in place and once I return from China this is something I shall be concentrating more on. For more information please have a look at www.winning4women.com. I’m very excited about this project and passing on all sorts of useful information and tips that I have learnt over the years, with the help of two of my closest friends from sport.
I have just filmed a health advice film clip for the
NHS as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations. It will soon be up on the website -
http://www.nhs.uk/NHS60. Also I've a campaign running throughout July & August with
Harvester Restaurants (
www.harvester.co.uk)
for the
Make A Wish Foundation (www.make-a-wish.org) which grants wishes for terminally ill children. With each specific meal Harvesters make a donation to this most worthy of charities. Please check out the posters in the restaurants and support it if you can.
I now have just about the best possible view out of Cowes Harbour and probably will for several decades to come.... I am actually the
Mermaid statue welcoming vessels into the harbour! The life size sculpture was created by my friend Jonathan Wylder (
www.jonathanwylder.com) a friend of mine and is one of numerous pieces I have modelled for him.
